Italian Modernariat Furniture: How to Choose Pieces That Last Over Time
Italian Mid-Century Modern: Quality That Lasts for Decades
Italian Mid-Century Modern furniture from the 1940s-1970s was built to last. Not for a season, not for ten years: for generations. The materials — mahogany, rosewood, Italian leather, brass — were chosen for their durability as well as their beauty. The construction techniques — dovetail joints, thick veneers, hand finishes — guarantee a structural solidity that contemporary production cannot replicate.
A Borsani piece from the 1950s has already proven to last seventy years. It will last another seventy with proper care.
Criteria for Choosing a Piece That Lasts
- Solid wood or thick veneer — particleboard deteriorates over time; solid wood and vintage veneers (thicker than modern ones) last indefinitely
- Artisanal joints — dovetail and mortise-and-tenon joints are much stronger than the glued or screwed joints of mass production
- Reversible finishes — shellac and linseed oil can be renewed without damaging the wood; modern varnishes are more difficult to treat
- Quality metals — brass and stainless steel last indefinitely; cheap alloys oxidize and deteriorate
Designers Who Produced to Last
Osvaldo Borsani was obsessed with construction quality: his pieces for ABV and Tecno are among the most solid in Italian Mid-Century Modern. The ABV sideboard with bar cabinet from the 1940s still functions perfectly after eighty years.
The same goes for pieces by Kazuhide Takahama for Simon Gavina: the Tulu chairs from the 1970s are still perfectly functional and beautiful.
How to Maintain a Mid-Century Modern Piece
- Clean wooden surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth, never with harsh detergents
- Apply beeswax or linseed oil once a year to nourish the wood
- Avoid prolonged direct sun exposure, which fades dark woods
- In case of surface scratches, use colored wax of the same tone as the wood
