Arteluce — Pionieri dell'illuminazione di design italiana

Arteluce — Pioneers of Italian Design Lighting

History and Foundation

Arteluce was founded in Milan in 1939 by Gino Sarfatti, one of the most visionary lamp designers of the twentieth century. Sarfatti was not just an entrepreneur: he was a designer who personally conceived almost all the products in his catalog, designing over 600 models during his career.

The Design Philosophy

Arteluce's philosophy was radically innovative for its time: the lamp was not a decorative object, but a technical tool at the service of light. Sarfatti rigorously studied light distribution, materials, and mechanical solutions, anticipating by decades the principles of functionalist design applied to lighting.

Collaborations and Designers

In the 1970s and 80s, Arteluce opened its doors to leading international designers. Among them were Perry King and Santiago Miranda, the Anglo-Italian duo who created some of the most iconic lamps of the period, such as the 1985 Triana, a piece that perfectly synthesizes the dialogue between function and formal poetry.

Acquisition by Flos

In 1974, Arteluce was acquired by Flos, another great name in Italian lighting. Despite the merger, the Arteluce brand maintained its identity for several years, continuing to produce extremely high-quality pieces that are now considered classics of twentieth-century design.

Collectibility

Arteluce lamps, particularly those designed by Gino Sarfatti and the designers of the 1970s-80s, are now highly sought after by collectors worldwide. Their construction quality and historical value make them sound investments in the vintage design market.

In our store, you will find authentic Arteluce pieces, perfect for those seeking design lighting with an extraordinary history.
