Fondata a Milano nel 1939 da Gino Sarfatti, Arteluce è stata una delle manifatture più innovative nel campo dell'illuminazione di design italiana. Sarfatti progetta personalmente oltre 600 modelli, anticipando il design funzionalista applicato alla luce. Negli anni '70-'80 collabora con Perry King e Santiago Miranda. Nel 1974 viene acquisita da Flos.

Perry King (Birmingham, 1938) e Santiago Miranda (Siviglia, 1947) fondano il loro studio a Milano nel 1976, diventando uno dei sodalizi creativi più originali del design internazionale. King si forma alla Birmingham School of Art e collabora con Olivetti sotto Ettore Sottsass; Miranda porta una sensibilità mediterranea e organica. Insieme collaborano con Arteluce, Flos, Olivetti e Bosch, vincendo il Compasso d'Oro. La loro lampada Triana (1985) per Arteluce è un esempio magistrale di design funzionale elevato a scultura.
