Founded in Milan in 1939 by Gino Sarfatti, Arteluce was one of the most innovative manufacturers in the field of Italian designer lighting. Sarfatti personally designed over 600 models, pioneering functionalist design in lighting. In the 1970s and 1980s, he collaborated with Perry King and Santiago Miranda. In 1974, it was acquired by Flos.

Perry King (Birmingham, 1938) and Santiago Miranda (Seville, 1947) founded their studio in Milan in 1976, becoming one of the most original creative partnerships in international design. King trained at the Birmingham School of Art and collaborated with Olivetti under Ettore Sottsass; Miranda brought a Mediterranean and organic sensibility. Together they collaborated with Arteluce, Flos, Olivetti, and Bosch, winning the Compasso d'Oro. Their Triana lamp (1985) for Arteluce is a masterful example of functional design elevated to sculpture.
